Curious Illness
Dr Graziella Magherini, author of The Stendhal Syndrome, has studied more than 100 tourists in Florence, Italy, who became ill in the presence of great works of art. The symptoms include heart palpitations, dizziness, and stomach pains. The typical sufferer is between the ages of 26 and 40 who rarely leaves home..
Dr Magherini believes the syndrome is a result of jet lag, travel stress, and the shock of an overwhelming sense of the past. She says: “Very often there’s the anguish of death.’ The disorder is named after a nineteenth-century French novelist who was overwhelmed by the frescoes in Florence’s Santa Croce Church.
Particularly upsetting works of art are: Michaelangelo’s statue of David, Caravaggio’s painting of Bacchus, and the concentric circles of the Duomo cupola.
2. Hula-hoop Intestine
On February 26, 1992, Beijing worker Xu Denghai was hospitalised with a twisted intestine after playing excessively with a hula-hoop. His was the third case in the several weeks since a hula-hoop craze had swept China. The Beijing evening news advised people to warm up before playing, and to avoid hula-hooping straight after eating.
3. Carrot Addiction
In 1992, the British Journal of Addiction described three unusual cases of carrot dependence. One 40 year old man had replaced cigarettes with carrots. He ate as many as five bunches a day and thought about them obsessively. According to two Czech psychiatrists, when carrots were withdrawn, he and the other patients lapsed into heightened irritability.
4. Cutlery Craving
The desire to eat metal objects is comparatively common. Occasionally there is an extreme case, such as that of 47 year old Englishman Allison Johnson. An alcoholic burglar with a compulsion to eat silverware, Johnson has had 30 operations to remove strange things from his stomach. In 1992, he had eight forks and the metal sections of a mop head lodged in his body. He has been repeatedly jailed and then released, each time going immediately to a restaurant and ordering lavishly. Unable to pay, he would then tell the owner to call the police, and eat cutlery until they arrived. Johnson’s lawyer said of his client, ‘He finds it hard to eat and obviously has difficulty going to the lavatory.”
5. Dr Strangelove Syndrome
Officially known as Alien Hand Syndrome, this bizarre neurological illness affects thousands of people. It is caused by damage to certain parts of the brain, and causes one of a person’s hands to act independently of the other and of its owner’s wishes. For example, the misbehaving hand may do the opposite of what the normal one is doing: if a person is trying to button a shirt with one hand, the other will follow along and undo the buttons. If one hand pulls up trousers, the other will pull them down. Sometimes the hand may become aggressive – pinching, slapping, or punching the patient. In at least one case, it tried to strangle its owner. Says neurologist Rachelle Doody, ‘Often a patient will sit on the hand, but eventually it gets loose and starts doing everything again.”
6. Mud Wrestlers Rash (Palastaie Limosae)
Twenty-four men and women wrestled in calf-deep mud at the University of Washington. Within 36 hours, 7 wrestlers were covered with patches of pus-filled red bumps similar to pimples, and the rest succumbed later. Bumps were on areas of the skin not covered by bathing-suits – one unlucky wrestler had wrestled in the nude. The dermatitis palastaie limosae, or “muddy wrestling rash”, may have been caused by manure-tainted mud.
7. Electric People
According to British paranormalist Hilary Evans, some people are ‘upright human [electric] eels, capable of generating charges strong enough to knock out streetlights and electronic equipment.” Cases of electric people date back to 1786, the most famous of which is that of 14 year old Angelique Cottin, whose presence caused compass needles to gyrate wildly. To further investigate this phenomenon, Evans founded SLIDE, the Street Lamp Interference Data Exchange.
8. Mary Hart Epilepsy
The case of Dianne Neale, 49, appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine. In the much-publicised 1991 event, Neale apparently suffered epileptic seizures at hearing the voice of Entertainment Tonight co-host Mary Hart. Neale experienced an upset stomach, a sense of pressure in her head, and confusion. Laboratory tests confirmed the abnormal electrical discharges in her brain, and Neale had a press conference to insist that she was not crazy. She said she bore no hard feelings toward Hard, who apologised on the air for the situation.
9. Foreign Accent Syndrome
There are about 50 recorded cases of Foreign Accent Syndrome, in which people who have suffered strokes or other injuries adopt a new accent. For example, Tiffany Roberts of Florida suffered a stroke and then began speaking with an English accent. She even adopted such Anglicisms as ‘bloody’ and ‘loo’. Ms Roberts had never been to Great Britain, and was not a fan of British television shows.
Perhaps the oddest case concerned a Norwegian woman who had fallen into a coma after being hit by shrapnel during an air raid in 1941. When she woke up, she spoke with a thick German accent. She was then ostracised by her neighbours.
10. Uncombable Hair Syndrome
Also known as hair-felting, this condition causes hair to form a tangled mass. In a case reported in 1993, a 39 year old woman’s hair fell out and was replaced by dry, coarse, curly hair which was so tangled that it was impossible to comb. It lacked knots, kinks, or twists that would explain the tangling. The hairs themselves were strangely shaped: the cross-sections were triangular, grooved, or shaped like kidneys instead of circular.
The unusual solution to the condition is to cut off the solidified mass of hair. In one case, a woman from Indiana wanted to keep her hair, having spent 24 years growing it. After two and a half months of lubricating her hair with olive oil and separating the strands with knitting needles, her hair returned to normal.

Shipwreck Surviving Tips
This is a list of the most important things to remember if you are shipwrecked. The list comes from Yan Martel’s prize-winning novel, Life of Pi.
- Always read instructions carefully
- Do not drink urine. Or sea water. Or bird blood
- Do not eat jellyfish. Or fish that have spikes. Or fish that have parrot like beaks. Or that puff up like balloons.
- Pressing the eyes of fish will paralyse them
- The body can be heroic in battle; if a castaway is injured, beware of well-meaning, but ill-founded, medical treatment. Ignorance is the worst doctor, while rest and sleep are the best nurses.
- Put your feet up at least 5 minutes every hour
- Unnecessary exertion should be avoided. But an idle mind tends to sing, so the mind should be kept occupied with whatever light distraction may suggest itself. Playing card games, twenty questions and I spy are excellent distractions.
- Green water is shallower than blue water
- Beware of far-off clouds that look like mountains. Look for green. Ultimately, a foot is the only good judge of land.
- Do not go swimming. It wastes energy. Besides, a survival craft may drift faster than you can swim. Not to mention the danger of sea life. If you are hot, wet your clothes instead.
- Do not urinate in your clothes. The momentary warmth is not worth the nappy rash.
- Shelter yourself. Exposure can kill faster than thirst or hunger.
- As long as no excessive water is lost through perspiration, the body can survive up to 14 days without water. If you are thirsty, suck a button.
- Turtles are an easy catch and make for excellent meals. Their blood is a good, nutritious, salt-free drink; their flesh is tasty and filling; their fat has many uses; and the castaway will find turtle eggs a real treat. Mind the beak and the claws.
- Don’t let your morale flag. Be daunted but not defeated. Remember: the spirit, above all else, counts. If you have the will to live, you will. Good luck!
8 Expensive Artworks Found Accidentally
1.In a farmer’s field
In 1820, a Greek peasant named Yorgos was digging in his field on the island of Milos when he unearthed several carved blocks of stone. He burrowed deeper and found four statues – three figures of Hermes and one of Aphrodite, the goddess of love. Three weeks later, the Choiseul archeological expedition arrived by ship, purchased the Aphrodite, and took it to France. Louis XVIII gave it the name Venus de Milo and presented it to the Louvre where it became one of the most famous works of art in history.
2.Beneath a street
On February 21, 1978, electrical workers were putting down lines on a busy street corner in Mexico city when they discovered a 20 ton stone bas-relief of the Aztec night goddess, Coyolxauqui. It is believed to have been sculpted in the early fifteenth century and buried prior to the destruction o the Aztec civilisation by the Spanish conquistadors in 1521. The stone was moved 200 yards from the site to the Museum of the Great Temple.
3.In a hole in the ground
In 1978 more than 500 movies dating from 1903 to 1929 were dug out of a hole in the ground of Dawson City, Yukon. Under normal circumstances, the 35mm nitrate films would have perished, but the permafrost preserved them perfectly.
4.Under a bed
Joanne Perez, the widow of vaudeville performer Pepito the Spanish Clown, cleaned out the area underneath her bed and discovered the only existing copy of the pilot for the TV series I Love Lucy. Pepito had coached Lucille Ball and had guest-starred in the pilot. Ball and her husband, Desi Arnaz, had given it to Pepito as a gift in 1951 and it had remained under the bed for thirty years.
5.On a wall
A middle-aged couple in a suburb of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, asked an art prospector to appraise a painting in their home. While he was there, he examined another painting that the couple had thought was a reproduction of a work by Van Gogh. It turned out to be an 1886 original. On March 10, 1991, the painting Still Life with Flowers sold at auction for $1.4m (US).
6.In a trunk in an attic
In 1961 Barbara Testa, a Hollywood librarian, inherited six steamer trunks that had belonged to her grandfather, James Fraser Gluck, a Buffalo, New York, lawyer who died in 1895. Over the next three decades she gradually sifted through the contents of the trunks, until one day in Autumn of 1990 she came upon 665 pages that turned out to be the original handwritten manuscript of the first half of Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn. The two halves of the great American novel were finally reunited at the Buffalo and Eerie County Public Library.
7.At a flea market
A Philadelphia financial analyst was browsing at a flea market in Adamstown, Pennsylvania, when he was attracted by a wooden picture frame. He paid $4 for it. Back at his home he removed the old torn painting in the frame and found a folded document between the canvas and the wood backing. It turned out to be a 1776 copy of the Declaration of Independence – one of 24 known to remain. On June 13, 1991, it was sold at auction for $2.4m (US)
8.Masquerading as a bicycle rack
For years, employees of the God’s House Tower Archaeology Museum in Southampton, England, propped their bikes against a 27 inch black rock in the basement. In 2000, two Egyptologists investigating the Museums holdings identified the bike rack as a 7th century BC Egyptian statue portraying King Taharqa a Kushite monarch from the region that is modern Sudan. Karen Wordley, the Southampton city council’s curator of archaeological collections, said it was a “mystery” how the sculpture ended up in the Museum basement.

About Facts and Myths of Sight
Myth: Sitting too close to the TV is bad for the eyes.
Fact: Although parents have been saying this ever since TVs first found their way into our homes, there's no evidence that plunking down right in front of the TV set damages someone's eyes. However, sitting close to a TV may be a sign of nearsightedness. Fact: Contrary to the old saying, eyes will not stay that way if you cross them. If your child is crossing one eye constantly, schedule an evaluation by an ophthalmologist.
Myth: If parents have poor eyesight, their kids will inherit that trait.
Fact: Unfortunately, this one is sometimes true. If you need glasses for good vision or have developed an eye condition (such as cataracts), your kids might inherit that same trait. Discuss your family's visual history with your doctor.Myth: Eating carrots can improve vision.
Fact: Although it's true that carrots are rich in vitamin A, which is essential for sight, so are many other foods (asparagus, apricots, nectarines, and milk, for example). A well-balanced diet can provide the vitamin A needed for good vision too.
Myth: Computer use can damage the eyes.
Fact: Computer use won't harm the eyes. However, when using a computer for long periods of time, the eyes blink less than normal (like they do when reading or performing other close work). This makes the eyes dry, which may lead to a feeling of eyestrain or fatigue. So encourage yourself take frequent breaks from Internet surfing or video games! Myth: Two blue-eyed parents can't produce a child with brown eyes.
Fact: Two blue-eyed parents can have a child with brown eyes, although it's very rare! Likewise, two brown-eyed parents can have a child with blue eyes, although this is also uncommon.
Myth: Only boys can be color-blind.
Fact: It's estimated that up to 8% of boys have some degree of color blindness, whereas less than 1% of girls do. Myth: The eye is full size at birth.
Fact: The eye is NOT full size at birth but continues to grow with your child. This growth partially accounts for refractive (glasses) changes that occur during childhood.Myth: Wearing glasses too much will make the eyes "dependent" on them.
Fact: Refractive errors (near-sightedness, far-sightedness, or astigmatism) change as kids get older. Many variables come into play, but most of this change is likely due to genetics and continues despite wearing glasses earlier or later or more or less.Wearing glasses does not make the eyes get worse.Download New Music Album [Just Click, It’s Free, Torrent File]

How To Download Torrents On iPhone, iPad Without Jailbreaking [Tutorial]
Apple has never been too keen on BitTorrent clients, blocking every single one from ever reaching the App Store. But even if you don’t want to jailbreak your phone, there’s a way around this restriction, and best of all, it’s totally free!Let me first begin by saying that if you have a jailbroken phone, you can simply download atorrent client (here, here, or here) from Cydia.
Okay, so the first step is to install Filer, an iOS App that lets users manage different files, as well as download them. For the purpose of this tutorial, the Lite version is enough, but if you’re looking to store more than 7 files, the $3.99 full version is highly recommended. You’ll also need a https://put.io/ account, which you can get here free of charge. Please make sure you use a real email address, since you’ll need it later.
First off, open your browser, from your desktop or your phone, you’ll only need the phone in a bit. From there, locate the torrent you want to download and copy its URL. Once you’ve done that, point your browser to https://put.io/ , a service that lets you download torrent files without a Torrent client. Can you see where I’m going with this already?
Paste the torrent’s URL into the only text field on Torrific and hit "Get". You’ll then see another screen so you can make sure you’re getting the real file. If everything looks like it should, click "Initiate BitTorrent Transmission". You’ll then get a login screen, if you haven’t logged in already. Please enter your details. From this point, the torrent you’re so eager to get your hands on is already supposed to be downloading behind the scenes, on the site’s servers, even if you leave your browser or shut down your computer or phone.
Once the download is done, you’ll receive an e-mail notification with a direct link to your file. From your iDevice (no, you can’t do this on your computer), copy that direct link, open Filer app and point it to said direct link. The download should begin momentarily.
As a final word of caution, keep in mind you’ll need a fast connection to do this properly, since you’ll have to download large files. Wi-Fi is highly recommended, and 3G if there’s no other option, as long as you have a generous data plan. Also use common sense when downloading files onto a device with really limited storage: make sure you have enough space on your phone (you can find out by going to System Settings > General > About).
How To Download Torrents On iPhone, iPad With JailBreak
- For Android
1. Go to the Market and download and install an app called aDownloader. Other free options are available, but this app combines ease of use with no download throttling.
2. Open aDownloader and configure where you would like it to save your files. Press the “Settings’ gear icon on the top left corner and then tap “Download Directory” to set your torrents’ download location. Unfortunately, there is no drop down menu for selecting directories; so you need to enter a path manually. If you’re not sure what path to enter, use Astro File Manager or a similar tool to see the complete directory paths. But /mnt/sdcard/Download should work for most Android devices. Now you’re ready to find and download torrents!
3. Open your browser and visit a torrent repository, such as www.seedpeer.me. Type whatever you’re searching for in the search box to the right of the Seedpeer logo and tap “Torrents.” I’ll use “Mozart” as an example.
4. With Seedpeer (as well as many other torrent search engines), the top results are actually fake advertisements. Scroll past the “Verified Mozart Torrents” section and find the section that reads, “678 Mozart Torrents were found.” Skip past the five or so results immediately underneath that and look at the torrents contained within the table headed by the Torrent name, Age, Size, Seeds, Peers, and Health columns.
5. Find a torrent that looks appealing and tap its name. (Hint: For best download performance, choose a torrent with a high number in the “Seeds” column. Seeds are users who are sharing a given file in its entirety.)
6. Tap the “Download this Torrent” link. Do not press any of the other buttons. If prompted to “Complete action using,” choose aDownloader.
7. Tap the downloaded file icon in the notification area, which should show the name of the downloaded torrent.
If prompted to choose a program for completing the action, select “aDownloader.” When aDownloader opens, confirm that you do want to download the file, then wait as your download progresses. Once finished, you can access or manipulate the file as you would on any other file saved on your device.
Helpful Hint: Using torrents is a two-way street. In other words, while you’re downloading a file via torrent, you’re also uploading that file. Once you’ve finished downloading a file, you can tap on the name of the torrent in aDownloader and then press “Remove task” so you no longer upload any additional data.
