all-in-one PCs suck at gaming

PC gamers fear me. They scowl when they boot up Far Cry 3 only to see my stuttering frame rates, low resolution, and lack of antialiasing. Just name it—if it's a critical graphics setting, I've disabled it.

I may look pretty on the surface, and I may be practical, but my gaming performance is almost always disappointing. I am the all-in-one desktop PC.

Duc Dang, Toshiba's Senior Product Manager, says all-in-one PC sales have grown 32 percent in the last couple of years, making them a major focus in the evolving PC ecosystem. The success should come as no surprise, as all-in-ones can make ideal family machines. By integrating a display and PC in a single, slender chassis, they eliminate desk clutter and reach relatively low prices.

Unfortunately, however, most all-in-ones do so at the expense of gaming performance—which is not only back-burnered, but usually taken off the stove completely. Cheap, integrated graphics and low-performance CPUs may be perfect for super-thin all-in-ones (which, from an engineering standpoint, have more in common with laptops than desktops), but they don't foster great PC gaming.

Yet there is hope for all-in-ones thanks to one manufacturer serving a very vocal, niche market.

The first of its kind

Maingear's Alpha 24 doesn't look like your typical sleek and sexy all-in-one PC. It has much more, well, "desk presence" thanks to a bulkier chassis and multiple power adapters, which are necessary to fuel the insane graphics hardware locked within.

"As the popularity of all-in-ones has increased over the last few years, PC manufacturers started to create thinner and more stylish designs, but also used mobile parts," says Chris Morley, Maingear's Chief Technology Officer. "We saw an opportunity with the Alpha 24 to put together an all-in-one that offers high-performance desktop components, and the ability to upgrade for future-proofing, which appeals to PC gamers."

mg-solo24-sideports-100019013-large

MAINGEARA full-sized GeForce GTX 680 is built right into the machine.

All that future-proofing starts with a discrete, high-end Nvidia graphics card that can be swapped out later on—just like you might do with a traditional desktop machine. Says Morley: "Form followed function. With that in mind, we started by building the Alpha 24 around the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 GPU."

That GTX 680 is not only one of the most powerful GPUs around, it's also a full desktop video card that actually requires not one but two extra power cables (for a total of three cables for the entire PC). The Nvidia card (and other high-end components) forced Maingear to engineer a much wider chassis than what you'll find in a typical all-in-one, but the greater chassis width helps alleviate heating issues. "This isn't the solution most mainstream users would want to see," says Morley, "but PC gamers care about performance, and we know the majority of our customer base wouldn't mind."

In addition to the GTX 680, our Alpha 24 review unit has a 24-inch, LED backlit, two-point touch screen; an Intel Core i7-3770K processor; 16GB of DDR3-1333 RAM; and a huge 480GB SSD. In essence, it's a serious desktop gaming machine with a built-in display.

mg-solo24-pr-100018927-large

The Alpha 24 managed to crush our WorldBench 7 graphics benchmark, achieving 87 frames per second in Crysis 2, and 144 frames per second in Dirt 3 on the highest visual settings at the screen's native resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels. The upshot is that this machine should easily be rocking the latest games for at least the next few years.

Why do all-in-ones suck at gaming?

So, yes, it can be done: A computer built into a monitor can achieve killer performance in even the most demanding games. So why are we seeing so many all-in-one companies struggle to achieve even the most basic frame rates?

Dang says hardcore PC gaming is a relatively small, niche market, and most all-in-one manufacturers aren't making gaming performance a focus at this point. Indeed, most companies are striving to make their all-in-ones as sleek and thin as possible, and this presents engineering challenges. The machines simply don't have the interior space to accommodate desktop-grade graphics, let alone their accompanying cooling solutions. As a result, all-in-ones are often loaded with GPUs from the laptop parts bins—integrated graphics capable of only choppy, low-res game play.

geforce-gt-630m-3qtr-682x342-100018106-large

Discrete mobile graphics cards are still permanently attached to the motherboard.

And even if a PC manufacturer does use a discrete GPU, it's usually still a mobile version that's permanently soldered to the all-in-one's motherboard, which prevents any future upgrading. Toshiba's most recent 23-inch all-in-one, the LX835-D3380, comes equipped with some pretty spiffy specs, including a great middle-of-the-road mobile graphics chip, the Nvidia GeForce GT 630M.

However, even with this discrete graphics solution, the machine couldn't reach more than 20 frames per second in any of our WorldBench 8 gaming tests.

Now, not all discrete mobile GPUs will dash your hopes and dreams. The Nvidia GeForce GTX 680M is the mobile version of one of the most powerful graphics card available today, and is able to play the latest and greatest games well beyond the coveted 60 frames per second mark. Unfortunately, though, you'll be hard-pressed to find a GTX 680M in an all-in-one. They are reserved for hardcore gaming laptops, which can top $3,000.

hp-compaq-6000-100021647-large

The HP Compaq 6000 uses a thin copper heat sink to stay cool. A computer under the heavy load of a game would generate more heat that this could disperse.

And even if you were able to get a GTX 680M into an all-in-one, it would generate an abundance of heat, which brings another problem to light: A lack of vents and fans creates a hot and unstable all-in-one interior. Indeed, manufacturers want their all-in-ones to be whisper-quiet, and integrating large fans and vents runs counter to the greater goal.

The lack of internal space also creates a domino effect that limits a company's ability to stuff its all-in-ones with hardcore components. Large power supplies won't fit inside the machines, so manufacturers instead use external power adapters. These external power bricks, however, can't supply all the juice necessary for top-notch components (let's not forget the Alpha 24's video card requires three separate power cables).

And, of course, just like notebooks, all-in-ones are equipped with specialized integrated components that save space, but can't be upgraded for newer, faster parts. Yes, in some cases, RAM and hard drives can be replaced, but these upgrades will only take you so far. Your all-in-one system stays the same, while your games' demand for performance continues to grow.

Compromise until help arrives

Darren Gladstone, the "blogger-in-chief" for HP's The Next Bench blog, believes that it's just a matter of time before more all-in-ones are capable of serious PC gaming. In particular, he's excited to see what the upcoming Haswell processors will do for games in typically underpowered systems. Haswell is expected to double the integrated graphics power of Ivy Bridge's HD4000, while still remaining energy efficient and cool.

Until Haswell or some other hardware breakthrough arrives, Gladstone feels that there could be some compromise on the gamer's end. Experimenting with your graphics settings will lead to playable frame rates in any adequate all-in-one, he says. His first strategy is to lower overall resolution; this will let you retain high-end effect settings. Next, you can tweak minor, individual graphics settings until you find a settings profile that runs at an acceptable frame rate.

The myriad of graphics options waiting to be tweaked in Battlefield 3.

bf3-graphics-100021387-large

Hopefully, we're on the verge of technological breakthroughs that will bring performance PC gaming to more all-in-ones. Maingear has taken the first step, and CEO Wallace Santos believes it's time to revolutionize: "In this day and age, there shouldn't be a reason anyone would need to compromise for an all-in-one performance PC."

Mega's offer: 50GB free storage and possible gotchas

MegaUpload entrepreneur and digital rogue Kim Dotcom kicks off his Mega file storage and sharing service on Saturday, and recently let slip via Twitter that users will get 50GB of free storage at launch.

Kim Dotcom

That volume of free file storage would be seven times what Microsoft's SkyDrive offers, and 25 times the initial free limit on Dropbox. While Mega's 50GB limit sounds like a great deal, we won't know for another two days if the oversized limit will come with some equally large caveats.

Mega may well demand a few gotchas if the service emulates MegaUpload, Dotcom's infamous file storage service taken down by U.S. law enforcement in 2012.

Mega: What we know so far

Dotcom has spent the past few months slowly leaking plans for his Mega reboot and revealing how the service might avoid the ire of American copyright police. Any files stored on Mega will be encrypted locally on the user's PC and only that user will have the decryption key to open the file. That way Mega will have no idea what kind of content it has on its servers, and thus can't be held responsible for what users upload. At least that's the theory; Dotcom's plans have yet to be tested by any legal challenges.

kim dotcom mega

Kim Dotcom with his new venture.

Mega uploads and downloads will be entirely browser-based instead of accessed through the desktop client MegaUpload used. The service will feature online collaboration tools, and you will be able to mount your Mega cloud storage as a virtual drive on your PC. Dotcom also plans to open Mega to third-party client apps through the service's application programming interface (API).

Mega will be unveiled on January 20 in New Zealand (That's January 19 on the other side of the planet) during what Dotcom promises will be a “press conference like no other.” Dotcom recently posted a photo to Instagram of a rock concert stage being prepped for the Mega kickoff.

About those 50GB

But back to that Mega free limit of 50GB. It sounds like a lot of storage; however, using Mega may not be as straightforward as Dropbox, SkyDrive, or Google Drive. With those mainstream services all you have to do is sign up for an account, load up your cloud drive to the maximum limit, and access your files whenever you want.

Mega may follow a similar path, but Dotcom's previous cloud service imposed some caveats that may reappear with the new one. MegaUpload required anonymous free users to download all their stored files at least once every 21 days or the content would be deleted. If you were a registered Megaupload user you had to download you files at least once every 90 days, while only premium users could store files indefinitely without accessing them after a set period.

MegaUpload files

It's not clear whether Mega will follow MegaUpload's policies for nonpaying users, but one MegaUpload practice that Dotcom wants to bring to Mega is user files. Dotcom is working with the Electronic Frontier Foundation to help users regain access to files they lost during the MegaUpload raid one year ago. If the legal challenge is successful, Dotcom suggested he will transfer MegaUpload files to Mega, allowing users to be reunited with their digital bits once again. Dotcom also hopes to offer Megauplaod premium users similar accounts on Mega, but his lawyers say it's not possible initially.

“It is our desire to make you happy. When we have court permission or a case resolution you shall have your premium status back + more,” Dotcom said via Twitter on Thursday.

While Dotcom is busy launching Mega, he is still fighting it out in court with the U.S. Department of Justice over the charges of criminal copyright infringement that shuttered MegaUpload last January. Most recently, Mega lawyers were in U.S. court charging the DOJ mislead the court and attempted toentrap Megaupload.

Dotcom's 50GB Mega plans were first reported by The Next Web.

Master Microsoft Office keyboard shortcuts in a flash with KeyRocket

keyrocket-100022269-mediumThink keyboard shortcuts are a waste of time? Think again: Every time you use your keyboard instead of reaching for the mouse, locating your cursor, navigating to a button or menu, and clicking, you're saving anywhere from 2-10 seconds.

Do that 20 times in an hour and you've saved as much as three minutes—maybe even a little more. Over the course of a day, that's upwards of 25 minutes. Over a week, more than two hours.

I don't know about you, but I could use an extra two hours every week. Which is why I strive to learn every keyboard shortcut I possibly can.

Of course, just the process of learning them can take time, which is why my new best friend is KeyRocket, which teaches you Windows and Office keyboard shortcuts.

If the name sounds familiar, you might be thinking of KeyRocket for Gmail, which debuted a few months back as a plugin for Chrome. It's still available, and still handy, but the new KeyRocket proper extends that idea to your desktop.

It works like this: As you do your thing in Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Visual Studio, the software monitors your actions. When you click something that has a keyboard-shortcut equivalent, KeyRocket notifies you via a little pop-up in the corner of the screen.

In other words, in short order you'll learn that Ctrl-B is the shortcut for Bold text, Ctrl-Shift-N creates a new folder, Alt-F4 takes the place of clicking the Close icon, and so on.

The free version of KeyRocket gives you shortcuts for Windows and the Microsoft Office component of your choice (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Outlook). By upgrading to KeyRocket Premium ($60), you get access to all of Office, plus Visual Studio to boot.

It would be nice if you could add components piecemeal—not everyone uses Visual Studio, for example, and I'm mostly a Word and Outlook man myself—but I can't argue with KeyRocket's effectiveness.

Indeed, if you want to learn keyboard shortcuts as quickly and easily as possible, and thereby learn to work to faster in the process, you should definitely give this app a try.

How to temporarily disable Microsoft Security Essentials

security-essentials-off-100022273-large

When it comes to keeping my PC secure, I rely on a small handful of tools: Windows 7's built-in firewall, Gmail's spam filtering, Web of Trust's helpful browser plug-in, and Microsoft's free Security Essentials anti-virus utility.

At this risk of jinxing things, here's my score to date: My PC: 1. Malware of any variety: 0.

However, I recently needed to troubleshoot a program that wasn't working properly, and, as always, the tech support department's first suggestion was to "disable my antivirus program."

Normally I ignore this advice, but because the program in question involves a lot of file downloading from various protected servers, I thought it might actually be worth a try. Just one catch: How the heck do you disable Security Essentials?

When you open the tool, there's no immediately obvious way. But if you absolutely need to, here's how:

1. Find the Security Essentials icon in your System Tray (usually it's represented by a little green house with a flag on top). Right-click it and choose Open.

2. Click the Settings tab.

3. Click Real-time protection.

4. Uncheck the box next to Turn on real-time protection (recommended).

5. Click the Save changes button.

So that's the equivalent of switching Security Essentials to "off." Do that, then go back to whatever you're trying to troubleshoot and see if it solves the problem. (If it does, well, that's a whole other can of worms.)

When you're done troubleshooting, repeat steps 4 and 5 (this time checking the box, natch) to turn Security Essentials back on.

An interesting operate of the Android os mobile phones that offer several levels of volume for the various features of it.

The program, developed by Look for engines Android os, is a producer of mobile phone gadgets to help compete with Apple's iPhone. The Android os is seen as strong competitors from Apple company and so many mobile phone organizations are able to offer mobile mobile phones like the individuals in the market to your current phone. Upgrade something more intelligent and competent. What do you need from your phone. It's an outstanding query to consider when it comes to mobile phone clients is for an update.

Originally, the sole purpose of owning a mobile phone was. Since the mobile phone tour, individuals began to want to take Photos, sms information, pay attention to songs and On the internet access. If you are considering buying a new phone, here are some of the best alternatives to Android os mobile phones. Best Android os mobile phones are as effective as the other Smartphones in the market. The purpose is that several mobile phone producers have adopted the Android os managing program on their mobile phones. It is possible not noticed, but the truth is that Google Android os mobile phones are all over the mobile phone industry. As one of the best mobile phones available with Android os, the HTC Hero has designed a lot of hype. This entry is designed for the price conscious buyer who wants all mobile the perks an Android os phone do not pay dollars more. Another choice for mobile phone gadgets operating the Android os application is BETouch Acer E400. The organization Acer set up its own user interface attached to the program and also set up GPS Android os, 600 MHz processer and Wi-Fi. A Android os mobile phones in the market first is the LG MaxGW620 InTouch. This phone is powererd from Android os 2.

It is a company, while Android os kicks WIN mobile in the teeth, &, a division of the begin mobile promotion if a viable company because it can not anticipate Look for engines shops Gettig in looking program in all locations and from any phone. One of them is the Look for engines industry where a large number of programs for mobile operating the os Android os than T-Mobile G1 and the myTouch T-Mobile with Look for engines. Android os clients are waiting several weeks after the first announcement to receive Pandora Cellular App for Android os.

Actually, many individuals complain that there is absolutely no competitors for Android os mobile phones in the mobile Market. An critical facet of owning a mobile phone is Android os Marketplace specialist, with a large number of requests to select. If you are a parent, and are concerned and monitor the actions of your children, to secure mobile mobile phones and other sexting Mobi dangers turn invisible, then parental management application is for you.

The discharge of Android os, the Look for engines mobile os in virtually all areas of the industry as "beginner is released up to and such as the super-power Smartphones. Since Android os has improved, has the Look for engines mobile os used in virtually all areas appear, such as great beginners and the end Phones. Look at it, the Android os mobile phones can now be bought almost everywhere. As Android os, the mobile os developed by Look for engines appeared in almost every conceivable niche, from "Rookie" to and such as the super-smart mobile phones.

The Rough Guide Slick bag Cellular phone reveals the secrets of this os returning and forth, such as designs from New samsung, HTC, New samsung and many others. It is only by tradition, Android os phone creates Skype im, voice and movie phone calls globally via Skype. I really like all the features of Android os, but UMA only tops, especially when I get house, I get off the frequency with which T-Mobile does not penetrate the walls of the developing may have.

In inclusion to details, Look for engines has many areas that prior to any serious threat to address, as a substitute for a weight offering songs Android os iTunes intelligent phone battle. However, since the reach of Look for engines Android os as a totally free open-source os that reduces the value of acquisitions Hand Goal. I've never used an Android os phone, and I have heard bad factors about it, like Look for engines uses the details for promotion, but I think it's a step towards a universal foundation for open-source intelligent phone.

The concept that Look for engines will encounter the same phenomenon in the shop request U.S. dollars ridiculous. The iPhone uses a lot of Look for engines programs and examine in Look for engines there is no distinction in their pursuit of your surfing habits. The only way to compete with Apple company continues to reinvent it... to come rather than an incorrect edition of the iPhone is slightly up in the same family (the Android os and it is in essence), Look for engines, that should come with a operate that everyone that enough to leave their iPhone for. Apple company generally skimming the high-margin clients with valuable, Blackberry mobile phones is still very well-known in the society (and blackberry sell more servers, the actual interest) and Android os, will take over the rest of the intelligent phone industry at $49 - remember that Look for engines gets nothing for all marketed Android os now and Apple company earns $200 - $300 for each iPhone marketed without iTunes... that's the distinction.

How to Maintain a Water-Cool System

You can now buy all the parts you need for water cooling off the shelf, and with a little research on the various fittings and tubing sizes, it’s easy to get your system up and running. However, there are some tricks to avoid the pitfalls that aren’t mentioned in manuals, such as preventing foreign objects from getting stuck in your waterblocks. It’s also good to clean your loop periodically to remove built-up grime.

Follow these steps and you’ll end up with a perfectly prepped and tuned cooling system, and avoid the nightmare of coolant leaks too.

1 Cut your tubing properly! don’t use a knife or scissors to cut your tubing, as the edges will probably be uneven, meaning there’s an increased risk of leaks, especially if it’s under sideways stress. A tube cutter will make cutting your tubing far easier, as well as more precise. They cost around RM15 but will make your life considerably easier
2 Flush Your Radiator/ Many radiators use water-soluble flux in their construction. This can gradually dissolve, and make your coolant and tubing turn cloudy as it spreads. To remove this, run a hot tap and flush the radiator for ten minutes with hot water. You may even see the water turn cloudy.
3 Rinse with deionized water. As tap water contains nasty impurities that can lurk in your system, you need to flush your radiator immediately after step one. You can buy deionized water from Hardware retails/store cheaply, rather than using expensive pre-mixed coolant. For the best results, connect the radiator to a pump and pass the coolant through it at high pressure.
4 Check waterblock for obstructions. Waterblock contain a maze of copper fins and small path through which your coolant will flow. Anything that blocks these could limit your block’s ability to cool your CPU. Dismantle it to check nothing has found its way inside during its construction. Start by removing any securing screws and taking the block apart.
5 Assemble waterblock. Remove any small pieces of seal or other detritus stuck in the waterblock with water or tweezers. If your block uses a removable rubber seal, make sure this is correctly placed in its groove. You can then screw the block back together and fill it full of coolant – this will show if the rubber seal has come loose.
6 Filtration. By adding a small section of sponge to your reservoir, you can prevent small fragments from radiators or waterblocks from becoming lodged in your pump or waterblock. Start by cutting a section of sponge to the right size for your reservoir. Rinse this thoroughly to remove any loose fragments and then insert it.
7 Add A Filter. Make sure the filter isn’t located directly over an inlet or outlet, although the coolant should flow through it before it exits. The filter will help to trap particles that could otherwise get lodged in the pump or waterblock. Alternatively, in-line filters are available that connect two sections of tubing, although these cost around RM30 each.
8 Filling. People often have trouble with trapped aor pr filling new water-cooled builds, particularly in small PCs where gravity can’t ensure the water reaches the pump from the reservoir. You can let gravity fo its work by tilting your case. This may result in a long process of filling, tilting and powering on the pump, but it works
9 Bleeding. Once your loops has enough water, the pump will engage and water will blast around the system. However, air can still trapped in radiators. As air rises in water, it will most likely be trapped at the top, so it’s time for some more tilting to release the air. While you do this, fill the reservoir so that more air isn’t introduced into the system.
10 Top Up. There still may some residual air in the form of tiny air bubbles. These can make the pump quite noisy, but they eventually dissipate. For this reason, check your reservoir level regularly for this first day or two. If air bubbles are stuck in the tubing, a gentle shake can break them free so they find their way to the reservoir
11 LEAK-TEST. By far the most important job before you poweron your water-cooled system to leak-test it. This can only be achieve once you’ve installed all you components into the case with the pump running. Start by disconnecting all the power connectors, except your pump, so your components won’t be damage if there is a leak.
12 Insert ATX JUMPER. An ATX jumper costs just couple of quid, but it handily jumps your PSU’s power and ground pins, facing it to power on without a PC connection. This allows you to just switch on the pump to identify leaks under normal conditions, but without powering on the rest of the PC. Switch off your PSU and insert the connector.
13 Add tissues and dye. While some leaks are obvious, slow leaks can appear after several hours. To spot them, wrap tissues around each fitting, and beneath your CPU block and pump, using tape if necessary. Add deionised water and a few drops of dye to your reservoir or fill-port, then power on the system. If there are any leaks, the tissues will soak up the dye.
14 Leave for 24 Hours. Leak-test for 24 hours, and leave the tissues on once you power up the rest of your system. Slow leaks can still manifest themselve once the system warms up, but the tissues will help to identify them, while helping to prevent the coolant from reaching unintended places. Leave the tissues on for a few days, checking them every day.
15 Persistent leaks. Some barbs and waterblocks just don’t fit together, but you can use mole grips on metal fittings (not plastic) to tighten them with only a small amount of pressure. Alternatively, you can wrap PTFE tape round the thread, or even use Loctite. Don’t use Loctite on plastic reservoirs, though, as it expands and can crack the casing.
16 Cleaning. Over time, coolant can break down and small amounts of material from waterblocks, reservoirs and tubing can get in, building up in bottlenecks or settling in tubing. Thankfully, you can clean your loop without taking it apart. Start by draining your system and opening up two ends at easily accessible points for draining and filling.
17 Flush the loop. Now flush the loop once with deionised water, which will clear out any remaining gunge. If your pump has multiple inlets, keep one open but attach a funnel to fill it, and attach the previous tubing as a drainer. As the coolant is likely to be dirty, empty it into a bucket, rather than onto your patio.
18 Mix your cleaner. We’re using Alphacool Sysclean, which needs to be mixed with ten parts water (one part Sysclean), or five parts if your system hasn’t beem cleaned for years. It’s safe to use with rubber seals, plastic and other metals, but it can attack the coating of nickelplated waterblokcs. For these, use white vinegar mixed with two parts water instead.
19 Add the cleaner to the system. Reconnect the drain hose to your pump and add the cleaner, cleaning up any spills quickly. FIll your system and bleed it, topping up with more water of necessary. The water may turn cloudy, due to oxidation, limescale, additive and other settlements being dissolved. Leave this in your system for 30minutes with the pump on.
20 Drain and Flush the system. You now need to flush deionised water through your system, so get your funnel and find a way to leave the drain house in the bucket while you fill it. Engage the pump and allow 4-5 litres to be flushed through, then add corrosion inhibitor, if your coolant doesn’t contain it already, which prevents any residual cleaner from causing issues.
21 Manual Tube-Cleaning. Sometimes you might need to get physical to deal with blockages or large grime build-ups. Some tubing goes cloudy over time and, while it’s fairly cheap to replace it’s worth trying to clean it first. You can do this with bathroom cleaner, white vinegar or Alphacool Sysclean, and the run a cloth or tube brush through the tube.
22 Cleaning waterblocks and radiators. There may be clumps of matter stuck in your waterblocks’ contact plate fins, which can be removed with a toothbrush, air duster and Alphacool Sysclean. Meanwhile, you can clean radiators by leaving them filled with a more concentrated solution of Sysclean, or white vinegar and hot water, then flushing this through a few times.
