Man On FireA Tibetan exile sets himself alight to protest against a visit by Chinese president Hu Jintao, On 26 March. Engulfed in fire, 27-year-old Jamphel Yeshi charged through a group of protestors in the Indian capital, New Delhi, who’d gathered to draw attention to China’s oppressive rule over Tibet. After onlookers beat Yeshi with Tibetan flags to extinguish the flames, he was addmitted to hospital with 90% burns, but died two days later. In the last year, around 30 people have staged similar protests in the ethnic Tibetan areas of China, mostly in the southwestern Sichuan province. Last year a Tibetan exile in India set himself on fire outside the Chinese embassy, sustaning mior burns. May Tibetans – including their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama – field here in the 1950s to escape Chinese rule
